American Anthropological Association (AAA) Annual Meeting, “Rethinking Multispecies Engagement through Sensory Ethnography”

Date: 15-19 November 2023

The association between multispecies anthropology and sensory ethnography foregrounds the critical role of sense-based methodological praxis that offers novel possibilities for detecting and understanding the nuances of interspecies connectedness. Moving beyond any particular sense to unravel sensorial potentialities, including how the touch invokes feelings, the sight that generates visions, the hearing that transmutes into deep listening, the taste that develops companionships, and the smell that brings back memories, a multisensorial engagement allows us to open new ways of understanding relationships that cross species boundaries. This sense-based approach carries the potential to generate new modes of knowledge-making, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and rethink more-than-human futures.
